While sitting around talking about people and their unnecessary website for un-needed things or things that could be offensive to other people, this Ashley Madison site came into the conversation. There it was a good friend of mine in our group was informing us all on ridicules site that says, ìLife is too short. Have an affair. Who would promote something so trashy, unprofessional and degrading? It is ridiculous that someone even think of something like this.

While breast cancer and ovarian cancer are common targets of awareness campaigns, there are various other types of cancer that affect women either exclusively or with much higher incidence than men. So far, over 46,000 new cases of endometrial cancer have been diagnosed in the United States in 2011, with 8,120 cases resulting in death (National Institute of Health, 2011). It is the third most common cause of gynecological cancer death, ranking behind ovarian cancer and cervical cancer.

Sometimes referred to as uterine cancer, endometrial cancer forms in the tissue that lines a woman’s uterus. This type of cancer most commonly grows from the cells that make and release mucus and other bodily fluids. It is generally diagnosed in post-menopausal women, with 95% of cases occurring in women over the age of 40. Risk for endometrial cancer is increased by obesity, high-fat diets, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Studies have also linked endometrial cancer to the amount of estrogen a woman is exposed to during her lifetime, making women who begin menstruating early or who experience menopause late more likely to contract the cancer as they have a longer span of menstruation.

Signs and symptoms of endometrial cancer include vaginal bleeding in post-menopausal women, abnormal periods including extremely long or heavy flows, anemia, and lower abdominal pain or cramping. Women are encouraged to consult a doctor as soon as any gynecological abnormalities appear.

Doctors may use several different methods in diagnosing endometrial cancer. An abnormal Pap smear can be the first indicator of cellular changes, but test results can also appear normal when the cancer is present. Still, Pap smears are often the first indicator that something is amiss. Traditionally, doctors will scrape cell samples of endometrial and endocervical material to test for cancer. More recently, ultrasounds have grown in popularity as a diagnostic tool for this type of cancer with doctors and patients appreciating the less invasive procedure.

Treatment varies depending on how far the cancer has progressed, but a total abdominal hysterectomy, or surgical removal of the uterus, is the most common treatment approach. Surgical treatment also often consists of removal of both ovaries. For high risk tumors, doctors will sometimes remove pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes or the omentum.

Radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy can all be used in combination with surgical approaches. Depending on the stage and severity of the cancer, doctors determine a treatment plan that is aggressive and appropriate.

When caught in its early to middle stages, endometrial cancer is very treatable and many women who have experienced it go on to live full and healthy lives. Women should consult a doctor if they observe any changes in their menstrual flow or experience other gynecological abnormalities. There is no 100 percent effective way to prevent cancer, but doctors recommend keeping a healthy diet and taking part in moderate exercise on a regular basis to increase the likelihood of a long and healthy life.
